History

A place full of stories

The Origins

The church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo has watched over Pieve di Ponsano since around 1100 AD. Built on living rock, it soon became a spiritual landmark for pilgrims walking between Volterra and Siena — a place of rest, of reflection, of quiet hope. The old pastoral archive holds precious traces of lives once lived. And in the church, the original altars, the cross, the working bells still resonate with presence.

The Present

The restoration of Pieve di Ponsano was not just architectural. It was an act of love. Each stone handled with care, each choice guided by the soul of the place. The church and sacristy were restored in collaboration with the Superintendence of Pisa. Frescoes were brought back to life. Before becoming architecture, a place is matter: touched, chosen, recovered, laid by hand.
